Uganda’s First Wildlife Vet Reflects on 30 Years of Gorilla Conservation.
Dr. Gladys Kalema-Zikusoka, Uganda’s first wildlife veterinarian, recalls her first encounter with a mountain gorilla in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in 1994. The experience led her to dedicate three decades to conservation, helping grow Bwindi’s gorilla population from under 300 to 459. Once on the brink of extinction due to deforestation, poaching, and political turmoil, Uganda’s mountain gorillas are no longer critically endangered. Kalema-Zikusoka’s work has been instrumental in revitalizing both the species and Uganda’s conservation efforts.
