A long-awaited investigation has revealed that South Korea’s government fabricated birth records, falsely reported children as abandoned, and failed to conduct proper safety checks on adoptive parents during the country’s postwar adoption boom. Since the 1950s, over 200,000 South Korean children have been sent abroad for adoption, fueling a massive and lucrative industry. Many adoptees, now adults searching for their origins, allege agencies used coercion and deception, with some forcibly taken from their mothers.
