Kirsty Coventry Becomes First Female and African IOC President

Zimbabwe’s Kirsty Coventry has made history by becoming the first female and African president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The 41-year-old former swimmer won 49 of the 97 votes in the first round of the election, defeating six male candidates, including Britain’s Lord Coe.
Coventry, a two-time Olympic gold medalist and Zimbabwe’s sports minister, will take over from Thomas Bach on June 23, becoming the youngest president in the IOC’s 130-year history. Her first Olympics as president will be the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Games.
She described her election as a "powerful signal" of progress and diversity within the IOC. Coventry has pledged to modernize the organization, promote sustainability, and protect female sport, including supporting a ban on transgender women competing in female Olympic events.
